What a Sidewalk Violation Means
The NYC Department of Transportation inspects sidewalks and issues a Notice of Violation when it finds defects such as trip hazards, broken or missing flags, or improper patchwork. The notice lists the defects in front of your property, and the owner is responsible for having them repaired.
If the repairs aren’t made, the City can do the work itself and bill the owner, and unpaid charges can become a lien on the property. Acting early keeps you in control of the cost, the schedule and the quality of the work. Violation removal is a core specialty at Nova Contractors Manhattan, and we handle the process from start to finish.
How We Remove Your Violation
- Send us a photo of the violation notice and your sidewalk.
- We review the cited defects and send you a free estimate within 24 hours.
- We file the NYC DOT permit, which typically takes 3–4 days.
- We repair or replace the defective flags to DOT specifications.
- We coordinate the DOT inspection and fix any required corrections at no additional cost.
Selling or Refinancing?
An open sidewalk violation can show up in title searches and slow down a sale or refinance. If you’re working to a deadline, tell us your closing date when you request an estimate so we can plan the permit and repair schedule around it.
Violations Caused by Street Trees
If a city street tree caused the damage, work near the roots needs extra care and may involve NYC Parks. Owner-occupied one- to three-family homes that aren’t used commercially may qualify for the NYC Parks Trees and Sidewalks program, and DOT no longer issues violations to those owners when the damage was caused only by a City tree. Ask us and we’ll help you check before you pay for a repair.
